silent speed dating

Silent Dating

What is it?

A group of singletons in a private room in a bar passing notes to each other! Mate Or Date who used to run Silent Dating events have recently been bought out by Slow Dating (June '05) We have no idea yet on whether these events will run again.

How does it work?

I arrived at the venue at 7pm and spent about an hour having drinks with people beforehand as despite the advertised time, events tend to get going at about 8pm. Once everyone had arrived and were labelled up with name badges, the 'dating' began. The tables are full of pens and paper and the hosts act as postmen so you can send notes to people on other tables.

In reality my table spent the first 20 minutes handing notes to each other saying "this is bizarre!" It only begins to get interesting when you start getting anonymous notes from across the room...

Unsurprisingly it didn't take us long to start making paper aeroplanes and attempts at Oragami!

Who does it attract?

People who've tried speed dating and want to do something 'different'

What's different about it?

Passing notes can be more intimate than other types of dating, you can't be overheard and people tend to be a bit cheekier... though not sure I like being told a complete stranger can see my pants..

What does it cost?

£20, but discounts apply to group bookings

What makes it special?

There is something about the inforced silence and note passing that makes it just like being back at school! There was a lot of giggling going on and it was less hard work than speed dating can be.

What's the down side?

It was hard to work out who people were because you weren't always able to see there name badges and there was no speed dating style rotation of people going on

There's also no form to tick people after the dating has finished, so if you want to keep in contact you have to ask them yourself for a number

Any tricks I need to know?

Be aware that those people you are sitting with at the start of the evening are the ones you'll be with once the 'silent dating' starts.

Bearing in mine the pant thing, you might want to get a seat with your back to the wall, so you don't flash your thong for the world to see.
