What
is it?
Adventures
company for single people. Mainly operating in London and Manchester,
but it does hold events in other cities too. Events range from activity
weekends to pub walks and circus skill days.
How
does it work?
I
booked on to Twisted Martini's circus skills day in London. The
event got underway at about 1pm and I arrived slightly after, so
the first thing I saw as I walked into the venue was a pile of six
people on top of each other! This was acra-balance, one of four
skills you learn during the afternoon. Sadly my late arrival (my
own fault!) precluded me from joining the human pyramid, but I did
get to try stilt walking (top of the class), trapeze (wow!) and
juggling (I can't catch.. so not my forte!)
There
was a break half way through the afternoon for some refreshments
and the two groups were mixed up to allow everyone the chance to
socialise.
After
we'd worked our way though the afternoon's activities, changed and
almost crawled out of the venue, our host April, took us to a nearby
pub to finish the day in 'Twisted Martini style' with a couple of
drinks and an opportunity to discuss how much our arms were aching
(that's the trapeze!)
Who
does it attract?
The
adventurous and those with a healthy bank balance!
What's
different about it?
This
is not a dating event, it's a singles event. A big difference that
most will find refreshing, but which equally you could find disappointing
if you attend with high hopes of finding a date. No one said "have
you ever done anything like this before" (except in reference
to my stilt walking skills) or even "how long have you been
single". In fact, the instructors at the venue advised participants
to take off "any jewelry or wedding rings" at the start!
(until someone pointed out their mistake!)
What
does it cost?
Activities
range from £15 for kick-boxing or a pub hike, to £200
for an adventure weekend. Circus skills is £60.
What
makes it special?
It's
an opportunity to have a fun afternoon or weekend and watch all
your smug married friends look a bit envious when you tell them
all about it! A classic example of something that makes being single
a good thing not a bad thing!
What's
the down side?
This
isn't where you come for a guaranteed opportunity to find a partner,
it's a fun thing to do that might make you a few friends or perhaps
get you date, but there's no matching facility, so you'll need to
go back to old fashioned methods if you want to get someone's phone
number.
Any
tricks I need to know?
If
you're going to attend a circus skills event, you will need to take
your socks off at several points. So don't do what I did and turn
up with your feet covered in chipped patchy nail polish left from
the last time your feet saw sunshine!
You
might want to stash an energy bar or some chocolate in your bag,
and girls, it's very likely you'll end up flashing your pants at
the group as your hanging 30 foot in the air, so make it's a nice
pair!
