How does it work?

There's plenty to lure you in on this well designed dating website. Once you've created your profile, which is part multiple choice and part your own text, you can choose between sending an 'icebreaker' (free one off messages), emailing someone you fancy, running a search, playing lucky dip (where the website selects a random profile for you) or selecting and saving profiles to come back to later.

Who does it attract?

Yahoo seems to have a larger geographical spread than some other sites. I tried a couple of searches in remoter areas of the country with quite precise age ranges (late 20s) and found far more local singles than I've seen on other websites.

What's different about it?

The smart matching system allows you to find a profile you like, click on 'smart selection' and then filter you search to show only similar profiles...very clever!

With the icebreaker messaging system, you can in affect 'try before you buy', as it allows you to send one off messages to people before you commit to a subscription.

You can opt to include a list of 'conversation starters' as part of your profile, giving people who email you a head start on what to write about.

What does it cost?

1 month for £16.95
3 months for £34.95 - less than £12/month
12 months for £66.95 - less than £6/month

What makes it special?

You can modify your search as you go, with options on the side of the screen to narrow your search by reducing the age range or geographical area. This is a lot easier to do than on some other websites where you search criteria is buried away under 'settings'.

The website is packed full of features, but easy to navigate and never feels cluttered.

What's the down side?

As part of your profile, you have to create a headline, it's a great chance to sell yourself in one line, but it's a little unfair on less ellocuent singletons. Unfortunately a couple of headlines I saw men using ('Is there such a thing as a soulmate') made me squirm.
